Body composition industry leader RJL Systems announces New American Medical Association CPT Code – January 2014

Clinton Township, MI, USA – Michigan-based RJL Systems is pleased to announce that the new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code for Whole Body Composition Assessment has been released.

The American Medical Association issued the Category III CPT Code 0358T, for Whole Body Composition utilizing Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), supine position, after a successful oral defense by RJL in Los Angeles in October 2013.

“It was an honor for me to work with the American Medical Association to formally define the procedure and scientific terminology on the use of BIA technology in whole body composition assessment.  RJL is happy to respond to the request of our customers, while at the same time answering the original call from  the National Institutes for Health for BIA standards,”  said Dr. Kerrie Saunders, Director of Education for RJL Systems.

The Category III code (0358T) officially goes into effect, becoming billable, on July 1, 2014. In the meantime, patients and practitioners can immediately begin discussing upcoming reimbursement options with their insurance companies. The more people who contact the insurance companies, the more likely they are to actually reimburse for the code on July 1.

RJL is already planning their Category I CPT Code application, scheduled for review by the American Medical Association in May of 2014.  RJL will post regular updates on CPT Coding status at

BIA technology was pioneered by RJL over 35 years ago, and is now utilized by researchers and clinicians from around the globe, including the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, NASA, Harvard University, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, and Yale University, just to name a few.

RJL professional body composition analyzers utilize the technology they originated back in 1979, to provide precise measurements used to assess and estimate lean dry mass, body fat, intracellular and extracellular water, total body water, body mass index, fat free mass, basal metabolic rate, and daily energy expenditure.

RJL Quantum BIA analyzers are ISO 13485:2003 certified, licensed through Health Canada, and cleared by the FDA as a Class II medical device.  Features such as the new iPad RJL body composition software, the portable printer with the Quantum III, and the rechargeable internal battery in the Quantum IV are just some examples of how RJL Systems continues to lead the industry.
